Easy DIY scrunchies with a hair tie and with elastic

Hello there! Here, you'll learn how to make scrunchies with a hair tie or with elastic. Your scrunchies can be any size that you want and you can make them any color that you want. I made scrunchies out of white, zebra, and flower fabric.

How do you think these scrunchies turned out and will you be making them? I think these scrunchies turned out looking really cute.

DIY Scrunchie with a Hair Tie

DIY scrunchie with a hair tie

1. Cut out a piece of fabric to be about 18-22 in (45 - 56 cm) by 3 1/2 to 4 in (9 - 10 1/2 cm) or any size that you want and you also want to iron it.

2. When you're done cutting out your fabric, you want to grab your hair tie and you want to lay your fabric front side facing up and then you want to pull one corner through the hair tie.

Then you want to take that corner of the fabric and match it up with the other corner so the fabric is wrapped around the hair tie.

3. Once you get the corners matched up, you can put the fabric on the sewing machine or you can sew this by hand. You want to make a backstitch first and then you want to slowly sew along the edge of the fabric with a 1/4 seam allowance.

4. When you get close to the hair tie, you're going to have to carefully move the hair tie and line the fabric up again and once you get closer to the the hair tie you can start to push the fabric back to reveal more of the hair tie so you can continue sewing.

When you get to the end, you can make a back stitch and trim off any extra thread.

5. Flip the fabric inside out. You can use a pencil to help you flip it inside out

6. Fold one of the ends of in and after you fold the that one end in you can place the not folded end in the other side and make sure you line up the seam before you start sewing.

7. Sew the ends together and cut off any extra pieces of thread. Make sure you make a backstitch at the beginning and at the end of your stitch.

If you're having trouble going over the hair tie, you can try picking up the foot and adjusting the fabric and then you can place the foot back down and try sewing again.

Once you're done sewing, you're all done.

DIY Scrunchie with Elastic

1. Cut out and iron a piece of fabric to be about 18-22 in (45 - 56 cm) by 3 1/2 to 4 in (9 - 10 1/2 cm) or any size.

2. Lay out your fabric with the front side facing up and you want to fold the fabric in half long ways and you can use pins and pin together.

3. Sew along the edge with a 1/4 seam allowance and make sure you make a backstitch at the start and at the end of your stitch.

When you get done sewing the edge, you want to trim off any extra pieces of thread.

4. Flip the fabric inside out and you can use a pencil to help you flip it inside out.

5. After you're done flipping it inside out, you want to cut a 8 in piece of elastic and the size of the elastic I used was 1/2 inches wide.

You don't have to cut it at 8 in. You can cut the elastic at a different size it just depends on how big you want your scrunchie to be.

6. Take a safety pin and pin it to the elastic.

7. Then you can take the elastic and run it through the fabric.

8. Once the elastic is out of both ends of the fabric, you want to line up the edges of the elastic and sew them together. You can go over this a few times to make sure the elastic stays in place.

9. Then you can fold one end in and then you want to put the other end inside of the folded side and you also want to make sure you line up the seam.

10. To finish the scrunchie, all you have to do is sew  the ends together and make sure backstitch and you're all done.

If you don't want to sew the elastic you can also tie the elastic but your going to want to add an extra half of a inch or more so the elastic is not to small. I made the elastic to be about 8.5 in (22cm) so then it not too short after being tied.

After you're done tieing the elastic, you can can sew the scrunchie just like the others.

That's how you make scrunchies with a hair tie or with elastic!
