DIY Neon Sign Painting

A neon sign painting with a butterfly on it.

Hey there! I wanted to try painting again so I made a neon sign painting.

I'll be showing you how to make a neon sign painting on a 11 x 14 inch canvas but you can use a any sized canvas.

I made the neon sign part of the painting in the shape of a butterfly but you can make any shape or word that you want. You can also make the neon sign any color that you want. I used pink and white to create mine.

Now if you would like you can watch the video below or you can read on. It's the first painting in the video.

You will need:

Canvas
Paintbrush
Pencil
Paper
Scissors
White acrylic paint
Black acrylic paint
A color of acrylic paint of your choosing.

1.  The first thing you want to start doing is that you want to paint a canvas of any size black and wait for it to dry before going on to the next step. The size of the canvas I used is 11 x 14 inches.

Painting a canvas black.

2. Once the canvas is dry, you can draw and cut out the shape you want to use out of a piece of paper or you can go ahead and draw it on the canvas. if you want you can fold it before cutting it out so it's even on both sides.

3. When you're done cutting it out, you want to place it on the center of the canvas and trace it with a pencil.

4. After you're done tracing it, you can draw any other details but make sure there not to close to your shape. The other details can also be attached to the shape. Just make sure you have room for the paint.

I needed to draw antennae for the butterfly. I had them connected to the butterfly but I made sure there was room around them for the paint.

Cutting out the shape for the neon sign out of paper and tracing it on the canvas.

5. When you're done drawing your shape, you want to take white acrylic paint and paint on the line you drew. You can make this line as thick as you want and if you need to you can paint over it again.

6. Then you want to wait for the paint to dry.

Outlining the shape with white paint.

7. When the white acrylic paint is dry, you can mix white acrylic paint with another color of acrylic paint. This color will be light and not to dark.

You may need to do another coat so make sure you have enough to paint over it again.

For my butterfly, I decided to use pink acrylic paint.

8. Once you got your color mixed, you want to paint on both sides of the white and if you need to you can paint over again. Also, you do want this color of paint to have the same thickness as the white line.

9. When you're done painting, you want to wait for the paint to dry before going on the next step.

Outlining the white line with a light pink.

10. After the paint is dry, you want to mix the same color of acrylic paint you used to mix the second color with white but you don't want to add to much because you want this color to be darker than the previous color.

11. Then you want to paint on both sides of the color you just painted  Make sure this color of paint is the same thickness as the white.

12. When you're painting, wait for the paint to dry.

13. The last step you want to do is that you want to go back over the white to make it a little bit thicker or to fix it and then you can wait for it to dry before hanging it up.

Outlining the light pink with a darker pink to give it a neon sign look.

That's how you make this neon sign painting and here a close up of the colors.

I love how the colors turned out and I'm happy I used the color pink for it.

I also love how the shape of the butterfly turned out. I was worried the butterfly's antennae were going to be to close to the wings but I'm happy I placed them in the right place. The butterfly looks pretty.

What do you think about this canvas and will you be making one?
